LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.
"The most segregated hour of Christian America is eleven o’clock on Sunday morning."
The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thought about this at church this morning. Nothing says we’re post-racial like our inability to share even the most personal aspect of our lives together. I went to an all-White church for a semester my freshman year and I couldn’t handle it. Being surrounded by White Christians who talk about “we’re all brothers and sisters in Christ”, but did nothing to create a welcoming environment for me or my friends of color, and also had no problem making the most racist comments. Nope, not here for that.

Shayna Y. Rudd, of Washington, wore a past-her-shoulders weave to have a better shot at the Miss America title. She said an adviser gave her two choices: imitate Beyoncé’s long luscious look or Jada Pinkett Smith’s flowing mane. “I couldn’t be who God wanted me to be,” Ms. Rudd, 24, said ruefully. “I didn’t win. My spirit was crushed.”
She has since sworn off relaxers and extensions; instead, she occasionally presses her tight-curled hair and slicks it into a bun, which is what she did earlier this month when she won the title Miss Black USA. (She bested 28 other contestants, only 3 of whom wore their hair natural.) “Don’t buy into anyone else’s standard, set your own,” Ms. Rudd said.
ok so, while miley is applauded for twerking badly,
little black girls are beaten by their parents for reproducing the bodily movements of their ancestors, for supposedly threatening to bring shame upon themselves and their family with that… in a white world.
thats all ima say about that shit.
……
what?
It’s not hard to understand Dee. Twerking is something that is inherently African, although it goes by different names.
I find this very difficult to believe you know.
Twerking is not ‘inherently African’ are you serious. Do you think i went back to nigeria & flipped my ass in the air people would be clapping and saying that my parent’s are AMAZING?? No. Twerking is an American thing so leave it in America.
^^^ This!
Body Shaming, Fatphobia, and Self Worth.
We need to come together as a society and make a collective effort to end body shaming.
Growing up I was never one of those “girly girls” that were particularly self-conscious about their appearance. Even today, I pretty much dress the same way I did when I was 12 (except for the odd days that my mom and sister pick my outfit), and I only wear makeup when I feel pressured to. When we were kids, my sister and cousins would exercise along to a Barbie workout instructional video, and I’d just sit on the sidelines and watch because I was lazy… and that was okay, because I wasn’t at all preoccupied with my physical appearance. In fact, I was rather content with it. Sadly, this is no longer true. Lately I’ve been feeling extremely self-conscious about my body as a result of some comments that were made to me by church members and a close relative back in October. Of all the comments, the one made by my aunt hurt me the most.
